March 5th, 2019 – Distributed denial of service attacks continue to be a challenge for many Incident Response Teams. While large scale attacks, like the 2016 Mirai attack are relatively rare, smaller attacks targeting individual websites run in the millions every day.

Attacks may last for a few minutes to a several days, and they typically arrive out of the blue. Organisations not prepared to handle these types of threats often face severe consequences, such as business interruptions or costly outages. DDoS attacks can cause collateral damage crippling the victims entire infrastructure.

The Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams (FIRST), which brings together incident responders from around the world, invested in the creation of a new training course “DDoS Mitigation Fundamentals”. Authored by Krassimir T. Tzvetanov, a recognized expert in the field, the training teaches incident responders to handle attacks and securing their organisations.

Using the training, incident response teams can build a better understanding of the types of traffic DDoS attacks consist of, how to analyze and interpret them, and learn how to best mitigate them and reduce business impact. In addition, the training leaves students with a solid understanding of how their organization can be a better internet citizen, and reduce the overall likelihood of their networks contributing to large scale attacks.

The training material is available immediately under an open license for download from https://www.first.org/education/trainings#DDoS-Mitigation-Fundamentals.
