Standards SIG
The FIRST Standards SIG brings together practitioners from around the world with deep experience in standards development, each able to bridge between the FIRST community and external standards development bodies.
Mission
Effective, interoperable, and widely adopted standards are essential to FIRST’s mission—particularly to our pillar of Global Language: ensuring that incident responders worldwide speak the same operational language and understand each other's intent, methods, and expectations.
As the systems underpinning our digital world become increasingly diffuse, interdependent, and cross-border in nature, the need for coherent standards grows sharper. Strong, reality-based standards directly increase public safety by improving the speed, clarity, and coordination of international incident response. They also raise the overall professionalization of the cybersecurity field.
The SIG provides:
- A single, authoritative point of contact for external SDOs seeking operational insight and reality checks.
- A mechanism to prevent the cybersecurity community from being bound to ineffective, conflicting, outdated, or non-viable standards.
- A resource for FIRST SIGs to improve the quality, visibility, and adoption of their own standards work.
Goals & Deliverables
Goals
- Serve as the primary point of contact for FIRST SIGs seeking guidance on standards development, governance, and best practices.
- Establish a clear pathway for FIRST standards to be formally recognized by external standards development organizations (SDOs), and to accelerate global adoption of FIRST-driven cybersecurity standards.
- Define trusted mechanisms and policies for managing potential vulnerabilities discovered within FIRST standards.
- Build and strengthen liaison relationships with external SDOs to ensure that real-world, practitioner-informed expertise from the FIRST community is reflected in the standards shaping global cybersecurity.
- Inform the FIRST community of emerging standardization efforts likely to impact our work, and act as a channel for FIRST teams to provide feedback on externally developed draft standards.
Deliverables
- Recurring community calls and open discussion forums
- Regular standards updates distributed to the FIRST Teams mailing list
- Standards development policies, templates, and procedures for FIRST SIGs
- Maintenance and stewardship of formal liaison relationships with external SDOs
Meetings
- At the Annual Conference (in person)
- Monthly (virtually)
